About Us

Explorer Scouts are young people, usually aged between 14 and 18 years old. They make up the fourth section of the Scouting family after Beavers, Cubs and Scouts.

We offer young people in Explorer Scouts a range of activities, events and experiences built around six Programme Zones;

  • Outdoor and adventure
  • Skills
  • Physical recreation
  • Community service
  • Global
  • Values and relationships

Alpine ESU has a mixed membership of 50 Explorer Scouts and provides a full and active programme including lots of activities and different camps. Explorers have the opportunity to complete Explorer Scout badges and awards including the Chief Scout Awards and the Duke of Edinburgh’s Award where unit members have completed expeditions in England, Scotland and Wales at Bronze, Silver and Gold levels.

Alpine ESU delivers a balanced programme with weekly activities including climbing, basketball, pioneering, night exercise, volleyball, cooking, craft, wide games, ice skating, theatre trips, golf, shooting, archery, hikes, bowling, swimming, challenges to name just a few

In addition to DofE Expeditions and training camps we attend national Scouting events including “Gilwell 24” (24 hours of non-stop activities for young people), County competitions “Elements – Sky Camp Competition” where Alpine Explorer Scouts have won the trophy for the last three years running. We also attend the County International Expedition to Kandersteg International Scout Centre in Switzerland every 4 years and run our own regular activity camps in the UK and overseas.

Alpine Explorer Scout Unit was formed in 2002 following the Scout Associations decision to cease Venture Scouting and create Explorer Scouting for young people aged 14-18 to meet the changing needs of the generation.

Alpine ESU roots were originally created from 3rd Kenton Venture Scouts and the partnership between Alpine Explorers and leaders is still firmly linked to the 3rd Kenton Scout Group.
